Just saw this on facebook & thought it was really nice timing that they are having it on the same week as our booth. I like the fact that it shows that you don’t need to do a lot to show your love for others. Something simple like saying “thank you” to the canteen dishwasher can really mean a lot to them. I know it’s kinda clique, but it really is a nice feeling to know that you aren’t alone in this world, and that there are caring, loving pple out there :p

Location: Moral Welfare Home for the aged

Rationale of choice: Moral Welfare Home is a home for the aged and the residents are slightly intellectually disabled as well. As a result, communication between the residents and our participants will be a problem and we hope that participants can learn how to overcome this barrier. This is because language barrier will also be present when we are in Bago City and we hope that participants are more mentally prepared for the challenge. Secondly, we hope that we can learn from the local hosts’ group of volunteers, ways to conduct suitable interactive activities for the aged. This is because we will be visiting an old folks’ home in the Philippines and we hope that both parties can have an exchange of knowledge, with us as a channel of transfer.

Goals: We hope that through exposure to the local voluntary group, the trip will encourage our participants to be more involved in local community service. Post-trip reflection session will be conducted to encourage our participants to review the meaning and purpose of doing voluntary work.

Activities: We have arranged for the trip to be conducted on 10th October 2009, from 1pm to 5pm. As requested by the host voluntary group, we have decided to take part in their Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. The Programmes Subcommittees of both parties will be involved in the detailed planning. It may involve bringing the residents out for an excursion trip.

Feeling quite sian after spending the past 3 hours doing literature research for Chevron Case Challenge. So what better way to relax then do some blogging and see who replies. haha. Johan suggested that we use this blog as a place to record down our thoughts and feelings, and see how we grow & change along this journey. I think it is a great idea & so here goes…

Basically, let me start with some self-intro. My life has been pretty smooth in terms of material well-being, but pretty tough psychologically. Although I have lots of happy times, I somehow feel I have never found peace within myself. I don’t really expect that to change after the YEP, but I like experiencing new things & learning more about life, and who knows, I may move 1 step closer to that goal come dec 31.

So far, I’m very contented with how things are gg. I like the way Johan gets other members to voice out their opinion. I like the way everyone in the team is very open and friendly. I like the way pple are willing to help each other even beyond their designated roles. I’m sure things will get even better as time goes by. Cheers! Prost! ;p

ps. this is yihan btw

Back to the days when i was applying for a place in the Sang Khem YEP team a year ago, i dreaded the interview that i had to go through before i was selected. So when i was selected into the team out of 100+ applicants, i truthfully thought that i was amongst the so-called “cream of the crop”.

As the YEP approached its end at the end of trip, i plucked up the courage to ask my team leader the rationale in picking me into the team. The response was simple, “We found you to be an easy-going person, that is all”.

Selecting our choice of participants is certainly not based on merits, skills or experiences alone. Team dynamics, as one puts it, is not easy to manage. We can’t have a team of leaders, or a team of followers. Having a good mix of individuals from all walks of life is what we are looking for.

Wensu and I sincerely hope that all applicants understand the rationale behind our selections and trust that we have seriously cracked our heads choosing our members. It certainly wasn’t an easy job. For those who didn’t get a place in our team, please don’t take it as a negative appraisal of you and your values. We believe that all applicants have got their merits and virtues.

To those who have been selected into the team, congratulations. We hope that the team can work as one and move on to achieve whatever we have set out to achieve. The days ahead are going to be tough but as a saying goes, “when the going gets tough, the tough gets going”. Find strength in the reason that made you sign up and that reason will keep you going strong.

Hey!

For prospective participants who want to know about the place we are going to at the end of the year, you may visit the following URL for more information: http://www.bagocity.gov.ph/The%20City.htm

As of today, only 2 different YEPs have been to Bago City and both teams have worked closely with this particular Non-Governmental Organisation, Today’s Responsive Youth (TRY).

TRY aims to positively empower the greatest number of young people in the City of Bago to develop them into becoming productive, responsive, self-reliant, competent and compassionate individuals of tomorrow. TRY has a vision of a community where the youth serves as an inspiration for a progressive, productive and awakened society.

TRY is headed by this lovely lady, Ms Tricia Matti and you would have caught a glimpse of her had you read the powerpoint slides. =)
